College After Dark

A hum through my pillow
A step on the ground
A door being closed
A noise without sound

This house speaks to me
It whispers in my ear
I lay very still
But the voices are near

They crawl through the hallways
They sneak through the doors
In and out of the closets
And under the floors

It’s only at night
When I’m trying to sleep
This house speaks to me
Of secrets to keep

Secrets of homework
Of boys and of food
Of late nights and laundry
And memories skewed

Do I wish it were silent
To lay down and rest
Without a pulse in my ear
And a throb in chest?

Or do I wish it will last
That I forever will hear
Their laughter and sadness
Through the pillow to my ear

The noise it reminds me
That I’m not alone
My girls are around me
There is life in this home.
